Review: Les Trois Châteaux d’Eguisheim (Burg Weckmund) This is not a single castle, but a cluster of ruins—raw, exposed, and far removed from the polished “fairy-tale” version many people expect. Among them, Burg Weckmund stands out as the most stripped-down and authentic, almost untouched compared to the others. I highly recommend walking up from Eguisheim. The trail winds through forest and hills, and the gradual climb makes the arrival feel earned rather than given. When the ruins finally appear along the ridge, it feels more like discovering something forgotten than visiting a tourist site. Weckmund itself is minimal—just fragments of walls and stone—but that’s exactly its strength. There’s no reconstruction trying to guide your imagination. You’re left to piece it together yourself, which makes the experience more personal and, in a way, more honest. The real highlight is the setting. With all three castles spread along the ridge, you get a sense of how strategic this location once was. The views over the Alsace plains are wide and open, reinforcing that this was about surveillance and control, not comfort. That said, it’s not for everyone. If you’re expecting signage, restored rooms, or structured storytelling, you may find it underwhelming. This is a quiet, almost austere place. Quick summary: Beautiful hike from Eguisheim Raw, authentic ruins with minimal restoration Unique setting with three castles in one location Impressive panoramic views – Very limited information on-site – Might feel “empty” if you expect a traditional castle experience Rating: 4/5 A place that rewards curiosity and a bit of effort—more about atmosphere than spectacle.
Worth visiting but if you are going during summer try avoiding going during afternoon because of the high temperatures and crowds. It is a great combination of short hiking and history.
Very cool castles that were easy to drive/walk to. I love that they are just available to discover on your own!
Very pretty, cool place to watch the sunset! Easily accessible, 5 minutes from carpark. The ruins are still relatively in tact.
Nice hike to, good viewpoint. Needs some historical signage to explain the history of the place.
Easy and short walk from the parking up to the 3 castles. Visited them on a Friday in July. Not too crowded with other visitors. We combined the visit, with visiting Eguisheim. Highly recommend both.
Nice how they have kept these ruins accessible without spoiling them. It is a lovely wild area, you could camp in the castle, if you can handle the ghosts. I just kept wondering how on earth they got all those huge stone blocks up there, without modern tools... Probably aliens.
Great trails around here, although think some may be slightly incorrect in their scale! But beautiful woodland to cycle and hike/walk through, with these fabulous ruins to explore and chamber around.
