FA SOL ENERGIE

Impressive and easily recognizable in the landscape thanks to its 48-meter height and 54-meter width, its 63 heliostats, covered in mirrors, reflect 1000 kW of sunlight, while its parabolic dish concentrates 10,000 suns to reach temperatures of up to 3,300°C. The site houses the internationally renowned PROMES (Processes, Materials, Solar Energy) laboratory of the CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research). With its unique facilities, scientists conduct cutting-edge research on solar energy, particularly in the fields of materials for energy and space, future solar power plants, as well as energy storage and solar chemistry (hydrogen, solar fuels, and industrial decarbonization).

Very nice installation. A true application of science and research. I just wish there were more explanations about its history or a small guide. Currently you can only see it from outside.

Didn't go inside (not sure if you could) but I took some pictures. Really strange to see such a futuristic building in the middle of the fields and hills.

An extraordinary facility in an extraordinary location - and a visitor centre definitely made by scientists! It definitely helps to have some schoolboy French as the translation booklets (helpfully provided) are quite scant. The demonstrations were definitely worth waiting for after the film; we managed to nab a melted steel plate from the shop afterwards!

Cool scientific installation. The mirrors are amazing, and there are plaques around the outdoor site in French, Spanish, and English showing information about the solar experiments. However, the indoor visitor centre has been closed since Nov 2017. 20 minute visit.
