Planned in 1868 on a former Jacobins site already used for market trade, Dijon’s Halles gave the city a cleaner, more convenient covered food hall. Built between 1873 and 1875, the four iron-and-glass pavilions turned that practical aim into civic architecture, with crossing market lanes adapted from an Eiffel-company planning idea and carried through by Dijon’s municipal architects. The building still says what it does: arched openings, brickwork, animal and fruit motifs, and the city arms make food trade visible on the façade. Protected since 1975, it has not retreated into monument status. It still begins with traders, market mornings and the daily business of buying food under a 19th-century roof.
Lots of fresh vegi and fruits shops. I am traveling here so had nothing to buy but felt local vibes.
A great market to buy everything you need. Beware it's not open on Monday. We bought some cheeses and bread. You can even find wonderful wines from this region. Everyone that serves us was very friendly.
Lots of fresh variety. However as a visitor several vendors tried to price gouge, not give back the correct change and pushing an over sale instead of what you asked for. If you are not a French speaker just pay attention and don't feel bad to be clear on what you want. Still worth a visit.
i love a market wherever i go. it’s not the cheapest in the area, but the produce, the fish, the cheeses, all are fresh, and the vendors are friendly and hardworking (i got up early and watched them set up their booths both inside and outside the market building) even just walking through made me feel alive and rich in life
Visit this market to get a feel of how French take their food seriously. You can buy all the ingredients for your next banquet there, be it seasonal seafood, exotic cut of meat or poultry. The varieties of ingredients and quality are better than super markets. Some stalls also sell pate, paella that are ready to eat. As most markets in France you need to be there early to see it in full action.
Had such high hopes of this market! One veggie stall was great. The next totally spoilt it. Ok, admit I’m an old, solo, female tourist - but I also know that 3 very small pots of olives, a dip and garlic doesn’t cost €39! I said no, they hassled me. I’m not the first reviewer to mention price-gouging! Anyway, I left the market and went to the Carrafour next door for my supplies. Not a patch on the Paris or Bordeaux markets - they are real. This is a bit faked up. Shame…
The most amazing market either the best produce Dijon has to offer we were totally blown away with the variety of everything and anything to eat in Dijon at great prices. The pate, sliced meats, salads, breads and terrines to die for watch out though they’re not open every day
