The commercial port of Dunkirk is no longer available to the public since the September 11 attack on the world trade centre in New York. After this tragic event, laws have changed with very restricted access for the public to the ports around the globe. I was lucky to be able to participate in a bus tour guided by one of the old pilots of the harbor of Dunkirk where we got a plethora of information. However, we were strictly prohibited from photographing the different sections of the port from inside the restricted access areas. The Acelor Mittal steel works that dominate the port were in full operation 24 hours. You have a good view of the steel works and parts of the harbor from the long dyke leading to the Charles de Gaulle lock where we could follow the tugs bringing a 300.000 ton vessel into the harbor. During the night we could follow the steel manufacturing process from across the channel. The non commercial parts of the harbors are less interesting, perhaps with the the exception of the section in front of the harbor museum.
I had a good experience visiting this historic place..the final retreat of allied forces during WW2..its one of the few priveldges as a seafarer in the North Sea..beautiful place indeed..plenty places to go and visit..
Some nice old ships, and a fantastic oyster festival once a year.
Hello, I am a truck driver providing regular services from Germany to Great Britain. Today at 4 a.m. I was rude to me by the employees controlling the trailers. The seal was broken by your employee and I did not get a new one. The gentlemen acted nervous and adventurous. I started to fear for my health, they started screaming and told me to leave. the check did not take place in the designated place only in front, even though there was no queue. I have reported this to my forwarder and steps will be taken not to use the services of your services.
Not bad. Well managed port but no facilities. Get food before you get there. Toilets were quite dirty when we went the last time.
Staff more helpful than p&o .I've been early a few times not charged me not like p&o and the food is better no screening kids as the coaches take the shortest route.
Dunkirk is better placed as a ferry terminal than Calais as not so far from the Belgian border, but it's 2.2 km from the motorway and it's used by lots of freight vehicles, so busy. The biggest critism must be for the so called passenger terminal which must be the bleakest place on earth, as the "catering" facilities consist of banks of vending machines with not a human in sight! Awful! Impersonal service from DFDS, passengers deserve more than this. Don't get stuck here!
Miles from the town, if your working in the dock, no way of getting out of the docks into town unless you want to walk for 20-25mins or get a taxi.
