DURAN PATRIMOINE

We had a nice meal on the terrace under the huge plane tree and wisteria. Good tasty food and friendly service. Good atmosphere with plenty of regulars. Almost best of all was spotless toilets and a rare baby changibg table!

We came across Café Durand by chance, as we were waiting to take our car for repair that afternoon and were looking for somewhere to have lunch. Inside it's air conditioned and had horse racing on the big screen, with the waitress taking bets in between serving food and drinks. We dined outside in a courtyard setting, where there is a tree that must be 400 years old judging by its approximate 2.5m diameter. The service was excellent and the food was extremely well prepared. It wasn't expensive either, with two lovely plats du jour, a couple of drinks and two coffees totalling around €34. If you're anywhere near this town, I'd recommend you pay Cafe Durand a visit.

Finding Café Durand was serendipitous. We were hungry and ready for any place to take a break. We’d just walked from the train station into Elne for an afternoon of exploration. As we came to the town center, this was the first open place we came upon. We weren’t sure about it at first glance—it’s a sports bar and betting place, quite brightly lit—but the daily menu was enticing on the board outside. A glance in to see what was actually served was enough to commit us to lunch. It was excellent and extremely well-priced. Friendly, too, and there’s a large patio that has an enormous plane tree that’s over 200 years old. That alone would be worth stopping for a glass or two.

Very nice bar/cafe. Lovely terrace area in the shade for hot days with wisteria and a eucalyptus tree providing cover. A cappuccino is practically a desert here 😀
