I was more intrigued by the building and how they could use an old church that the Museum itself, having being visited the same thing in Marseille Chamber of Commerce and at Comex headquarters in La Ciotat years ago ... So after researching, I found out that this museum is located in the former Church of Saint John the Baptist, itself built on the site of the old Espalion hospice, the church was constructed in the late 15th and 16th centuries, with services held there from 1478. Antoine Salvanh, the architect of the Rodez Cathedral bell tower, designed its southeast portal in 1508 and its hexagonal bell tower between 1503 and 1552. A belfry supporting the town bell was erected at its eastern corner. The church was deconsecrated in 1883, after the consecration of the new Church of Saint John the Baptist opposite. Its northwest façade was then transformed in 1884 by the Rodez architect Gonzague Grinda, replacing the chancel. And in 1897, it became the Town Hall following the creation of Boulevard Joseph Poulenc, replacing the site of the fortifications. This neo-Gothic façade was then created, after the apse and side chapels were demolished ! The town hall and municipal services were housed in the building until 1948, when the town hall moved to the former courthouse. The old church remained unused until 1975, when the collections of Rouergue folk art and traditions assembled by Joseph Vaylet were installed there (Joseph Vaylet Museum). In 1980, the Scaphandre Museum was also established here ... where you can see works and an horrible flashy diving turret "Comex" in front ?! Knowing that the church has been listed as a historical monument since 1979 ...
Very enjoyable. Interesting artefacts from the history of underwater exploration.
