Amazing Gentoo penguin colony and rookery. We did a wet landing in light snow in Feb. Chicks were big, fuzzy and hungry. While we were there the glacier dropped a big chunk of ice. Some old whale bones on the shore.
We went by zodiacs here from expedition ships to see Gentoo penguin colonies. This was the first time I saw penguin highways and colonies, amazing experience. I also went for kayaking around here to see sapphire icebergs. And I also did polar plunge around these islands
Full of wildlife. Beautiful place to visit even in the rain.
Home to the largest population of gentoo penguins on the peninsula. The island also had a Weddell seal and many bird species. We saw many pilfered penguin eggs plus a penguin carcass. We had a short window to vid it the island due to intermittent rough seas.
This place is beautiful! Cuverville Island was one of our first stops on our week-long cruise around the Antarctic Peninsula. We went with Antarctica XXI and they did a wonderful job bringing us here, taking the zodiacs from the ship to shore, and guiding us on a little walk ashore. We learned a bit about the gentoo penguins that were nesting there (and even saw a few early babies!) in late December/early January. We were fortunate enough to have a relatively clear day on our visit, and it was very nice temperature-wise. Overall, an excellent place to visit while touring Antarctica if you want to see penguins up close! Since so few humans visit, they aren’t scared of you at all and will walk right up to you with curiosity! So cute! 🐧
Wow, amazing place. We spent much time here viewing the gentoo penguins and waddle seal. So many penguins and the scenery was awesome!
Aboard Quark Expedition's World Explorer in November 2024, we arrived at Cuverville Island (64° 41.0’ S / 062° 37.6’ W) three days after our departure from Ushuaia, Argentina, not long after we passed through the Drake Passage. Awesome polar vistas and a great Zodiac landing for the 100 or so passengers who elected to make the expedition onto the island (including me).
Incredible experience to see such a beautiful place of this earth. Large colony of Gentoo Penguins. If you visit, remember to adhere to IAATO guidelines.
