Before Les Célestins faced the square as a grand public venue, this was the ground of the Célestins convent. In 1792 it reopened in another form, with spectators replacing enclosure and performance giving the site a new daily pull. The City bought it in 1838, then rebuilt through two nineteenth-century fires rather than letting the venue disappear. Gaspard André’s 1881 reconstruction gave that persistence its shape: an Italianate room of galleries and decorated surfaces, set behind a façade made for public ceremony and a stage deep enough for scenery and machinery. The result is still active, with an old convent site held in the movement of audiences, seats and performance.
A beautiful and impressive theatre with a lot of history. The interior is truly special, and the visit leaves a strong impression. Worth seeing even if you’re not attending a performance.
This is a gorgeous venue. It's not huge so every seat is going to provide a good view of the stage. However, some of the seats are really shallow (especially those up in the balcony). They can get uncomfortable after a while because the shallowness of thevseat itself only supports your behind without supporting your thighs. But if you get a chance to see a show here, definitely do it.
Our university took us to visit and learn the history of this Theatre and I must say, we were welcomed very well. The place is beautiful and Im eager to book a ticket for a show.
Fabulous theater! My first Biennale starts from here for a public rehearsal. The historical building is well preserved and very welcoming in front of a square. The size is human for a good view from any seat.
Nice mid size opera-like theatre. Went there for a spectacle by Arthur Brachetti and loved it be it the acoustic or on-stage visual effects.
Lyon is an architect lovers dream city, every building is very interesting and intricate. This is a theatre with an incredible facade.
A beautiful spot with stunning architecture right in the center of Lyon. The Celestins Theatre is a must-see, showcasing the city's cultural charm.
