In the southwest of Combourg stands the Château de Combourg, a castle with a classic medieval appearance. The castle dates back to the 11th century but was expanded in the 14th and 15th centuries. It is built around a square courtyard, with large defensive towers at the corners. In the 1560s, François d'Acigné turned his lordship into a Calvinist congregation and installed a minister in the village. After his death at the Battle of Jarnac (1569), the castle passed to a Catholic relative, and the Protestant congregation disappeared from Combourg. However, the most famous resident of the Château de Combourg is François René de Chateaubriand, the renowned French writer, poet, and politician (yes, the meat dish is named after him), who spent part of his youth there. Several rooms of the castle have been converted into a Chateaubriand museum. Interesting!
Lovely little chateau. We paid the lower price to explore the grounds. Entry to the chateau is via guided tour only which is in French. They do have English information sheets though. The site is well kept and nice to walk around. There is also a small cafe and gift shop.
A castle dating with the oldest tower dating from the XII century. Unfortunately our tour was only in French and couldn’t understand much. The guide was very good and nice and quite knowledgeable about the castle and the Chateaubriand history (of course). They have some sheets in different languages in case you don’t speak French as it was our case. Worth the money and the time. Don’t forget to take a walk around the gorgeous gardens!
The tourist guide in the castle was obviously annoyed by tourists, and we in return were annoyed by her stuck up rude attitude. The castle itself is really nice. Sadly the guided tour is only in french. You get a little book of information written in english but you dont find out as much as if you were french speaking tourist.
As a non-FR turist I woudl expect a little more. 4,70 euro for garden vistiting, which by the way is not garden just a medow, is to mutch! It shoudl be free. Also no English speaking guide or even a paper lieflet that will fulfill the quirasity. Ony FR speking are able to vist and understnad the history. For me it is a waist of time and money. very dissapointed.
Such a delight!! Beautiful parkland with enormous mature trees...and a magical castle ramparts and all! Could easily absorb what the guide was conveying and magical to wander such a place
The castle is via a guided tour that is around 45mins. The tour is in french, however you do get a brief history via a set of cards about the family and the key rooms. The grounds are all to grass but worth a walk around. The guide when we were there was very helpful spoke some English and was able to give a potted translation on the tour.
Wow, what a place! Guided tour of the chateau. The guide did not speak a lot of English but did her best to translate which was very charming. We were also given a booklet in English which gave good information about the place. Enjoyed it a lot.
