We went to Rouen for a weekend. A highlight is seeing the wonderful Cathedral. The facade was a favorite subject for Monet. He painted it many times, in different seasons and in different light. The face is very ornate and is an amazing backdrop for a light show. The show is free and takes place every evening during the summer. We were there in mid September, which turned out to be end of the season for the light show. We enjoyed it so much that we saw it twice. The first was on a Saturday night and the Plaza was packed. The second was on Sunday night with very few spectators. If you are in Rouen, you should see the light show. It's a unique and enjoyable experience.
This Cathedral is almost 900 years old. Has been rebuilt several times. Beautiful, breathtaking architecture both inside and outside! This was what inspired Monet.Entry is free. We were there on June 15th, 2026, Monday evening.
Impressive! Quite different during the day and the night. It becames more interesting when you know the history of this cathedral. Worth visiting!!!
It's a beautiful cathedral that can hold 6,000 people! Part of it was heavily damaged during the war, but you'd never know as repairs were done seamlessly. One of the many sights to see when in Rouen.
Absolutely stunning inside and out. The details on the facade are breathtaking. Has a little garden on the side which gives an interesting side view of the church
So, there seems to be a lot of Notre Dame Cathedrals in France. This is not the famous one located in Paris but the one in Rouen; and it was equally amazing. It does not matter how many times I visit one of these amazing cathedrals, I am always in awe of the size and ornateness of these structures; not to mention that they were built hundreds of years ago. Overall, the structure is in very good condition and there is always ongoing renovations and repair. Unfortunately, some of the areas, including the tomb of Richard the Lion Heart. Regardless, much to see and take in and highly recommend a visit.
Impressive Cathedrale right in the center of Rouen. Very beautiful gothic church where everything is grand. A must visit.
A breathtaking masterpiece of Gothic architecture — one of the most magnificent cathedrals in all of France ⛪✨. Standing before it feels like stepping back through centuries of history, art, and faith. Every detail, from the intricate façade to the towering spire, tells a story of devotion and craftsmanship. 🏛️ What Makes It Special The cathedral inspired Claude Monet, who painted it over 30 times to capture how light changes its appearance — and when you stand there, you understand why. The play of light and shadow across the façade is mesmerizing, especially during sunrise and sunset. Inside, the soaring ceilings and stained-glass windows create a peaceful, almost spiritual silence. 🕰️ Historical Importance Built between the 12th and 16th centuries, it houses the heart of Richard the Lionheart and remains one of the tallest church structures in France. Despite damage during wars and lightning strikes, it has been beautifully restored — a symbol of Rouen’s resilience. 📝 Practical Info ✅ Free entrance ✅ Light show (in summer months) — a must-see experience that brings Monet’s vision to life 🎨 ✅ Nearby cafés and shops for a perfect cultural stroll afterward A place that leaves you speechless — not just for its beauty, but for its soul. Whether you’re religious or not, standing here fills you with awe and peace. ⸻ For more tips follow me on Google.
