What a lovely walk along the top of ramparts and more beautiful one outside the fortified town walls in nature. Plenty of butterflies and bird song and sheep too. On top of ramparts says no cycles and not really suitable if you have mobility issues as steps up, tree roots and very uneven in places. The outside walk below city walls is very serene and beautiful. It is well paved and their was plenty of cyclists and dog walkers. Its good for children too as plenty of nooks and crannies in the walls and tower bases to explore.
Only went for a night stop and stumbled across this beautiful little town. Even went back on the way home.
This is one of the few mostly walled cities left in the area. Walking along the walls and walking along inside the walls gives you an impressive View and impression of what it was like to live in such a city and what they had to go through. There is a stark contrast between what's outside the town and inside the walls
Those who visit Bergues (Dutch: Sint-Winoksbergen) can literally and figuratively not avoid the city walls. After the Peace of Aachen in 1688, Bergues came into the hands of Louis XIV, who had the medieval ramparts modernized by his master builder Vauban. Since the 5300m long fortifications never had to fend off an attack, they remained intact and apart from some decay, they are one of the best-preserved fortifications in French Flanders. A walk on the walls, bastions and along the gates is definitely worth it.
