I loved my visit to Arlaten Museum! There is SO MUCH great descriptive information - in several languages, including English (much appreciated). Wonderful to see the recreations of times past, and also very modern displays also. If you have time, this is a must-do while in Arles.
Really interesting museum showing both the culture and history of Provence but also a history of how the museum was organized over the past century. Beautifully presented with something for everyone.
Stunning museum exploring the traditions of the region of Arles. Good interpretation in English and Spanish as well as French. Raises some questions around political uses of ethnography - e.g. what does it mean to celebrate "the homeland". I enjoyed the exhibits especially the Taranque monster who lives in the Rhône and the story about him in the different local dialects. I would have liked more about Camargue transhumance, but a display was not working properly.
A must if you are in the area. The museum is very well put together and beautifully displayed. The new architectural features like the suspension staircase and glass patterned walls and floors are magnificent. We loved the exhibitions showing Régional life and cultures. Easy to understand in English and navigate. Well done curators for this exhibition.
A wonderfully informative, thoughtfully designed small museum that focuses on the fascinating culture of Provence and particularly the distinctive Arlésienne cultural influence that Arles is so famous for. Exhibits are well labeled, with interactive screens that display detailed descriptions of literally every single little object and artifact being exhibited - in French, English AND Italian. Lots of interactive displays, like a case full of musical instruments that you can touch a screen and a small speaker will start playing a sound clip of it being played. There are very kind and well-informed docents throughout the galleries who will gladly show you how to operate everything and they seemed to be happy to answer any questions asked of them. This was an absolute gem of an experience, and it is a highly rewarding and enjoyable visit for people who are interested in the culture of South Mediterranean France. It does a great job of evoking the culture, history and atmosphere of Provence.
MA brilliant and surprising museum - well worth a visit We only visited this museum as the exterior looked interesting and it was included for free on our 'Pass de Liberté' which we bought to access the Roman Theatre and Arena - but what a treat it was! Fascinating exhibits showing local life through the centuries including costumes, and implements from farming, fishing, agriculture etc. The building itself is fascinating - Roman remains in the basement, a Jesuit chapel on floor l and a series of modern rooms with interesting architecture and pictures. It includes exhibits staged by Christian Lacroix who was born locally. Good use of audio visual elements for younger visitors - and lots of signage in English so easy to interpret.
This museum is incredible. It was beyond anything I expected. There are dioramas, cabinets of curiosity, fascinating information about Provençal life, historic clothing, fascinating ephemera, and really beautiful and well-designed displays. Plus the building is gorgeous and there are Roman ruins in the central courtyard. I only wish I’d budgeted more time for my visit. Definitely visit this museum; you won’t be disappointed!
Really well put together local museum. Great exhibits about the Provence and its culture. The chapel and ruins are worth a visit and the exhibits are excellent. A great gem and def worth a visit.
