My wife and I are rather committed advocates of lifelong learning—enthusiastic, some might say, to a fault. We drift (purposefully) from one discipline to another: finishing one postgraduate course only to begin the next, closing one doctorate and, almost immediately, opening another—with a third already hovering politely in the wings. Inevitably, this produces an alarming volume of notes. And while we respect modern technology, we refuse to surrender entirely to it. There remains something quietly civilised—almost ceremonial—about proper paper, a fountain pen, and a well-sharpened pencil. Progress is all very well, but not at the expense of pleasure. For years, we have relied on the craftsmanship of Parker and Waterman, and our collection has grown to a rather indecent size. Alongside traditional fountain pens, we have also come to appreciate Parker’s somewhat underappreciated 5th Technology—a curious hybrid that borrows elegance from the fountain pen, smoothness from the rollerball, and convenience from the humble ballpoint. It writes cleanly, dries quickly, and—mercifully—rarely misbehaves. It is worth noting, perhaps with a hint of irony, that Parker no longer exists as an independent entity, but operates under Newell Brands. Still, many pens proudly bear the reassuring inscription “Made in France,” a nod to their production near Nantes—proof that tradition, like good ink, continues to flow.
