My first bouillabaisse and the yardstick against which all others will be measured from now on. Excellent! The setting is beautiful: a little harbour just out of the central part of Marseille. It is usually full so worth booking in advance. Also the bouillabaisse is quite filling so best to come on an empty stomach and not have any plans for substantial meals following your visit in the same day 🙂. Leave room for desserts of course. Mine was a delicious lemon merengue with herbs from the Calanques. A must go place if you have time in Marseille!
Fantastic evening with incredible seafood, all prepared to the highest standards. Their speciality Bouillabaisse was one of the best we’ve had the pleasure of enjoying as we’re all the other dishes! The view and location are perfect for an unrushed meal with family and friends. Quick reminder, no parking in the immediate vicinity, get their early, find public parking about 15-20 minutes away, and enjoy a leisurely stroll of the waterfront promenade in the Center of all the Action!
An absolute highlight of our time in Marseille! Despite not having a reservation, the staff were incredibly accommodating and friendly, managing to find a table for us in this legendary establishment. Chez Fonfon is truly a local institution, and after dining here, it’s easy to see why it’s the gold standard for Bouillabaisse. Even as someone who typically isn’t a fan of fish soups, I was deeply impressed by the sheer sophistication and depth of flavor in their signature dish—it is undeniably the star of the show. The octopus was another standout; perfectly tender and delicious. All of this is complemented by a stunning view of the Vallon des Auffes, looking out over the charming port and the bridge. It’s pricey, but for the quality and the heritage, it’s an essential Marseille experience.
We had bouillabaisse and duck here. The food was great. Bouillabaisse broth was rich and the fish variety fresh. It’s a lot of food for one person. Bouillabaisse is €64. It’s more than most establishment, but it worth it. The food and location. Recommend going here at dusk, beautiful area.
Today was the day I first encountered Marseille's traditional fish dishes, especially among the cuisine of the southern region of France. It was a restaurant I visited thanks to my husband's old friend, and it seems to be a very famous place. They were filming at the broadcasting station. I heard it's on TV next week. The dish was very familiar yet allowed you to feel the texture of fresh fish. It's a shame that it looks a bit simple in the photos. I highly recommend you visit it at least once. Even the scenery outside the window will be mesmerizing.
Since it’s said that bouillabaisse is a must-try in Marseille, we decided to visit this restaurant. The fish was fresh, and the service was refined, though the prices were quite high. The mackerel dish we ordered as a starter was so delicious that I’m now more curious about their other menu items than the bouillabaisse itself. While it seems walk-ins might be possible on rare occasions, I’d recommend making a reservation.
Came in for some dinner, didn’t have a reservation, got sat upstairs away from the window with a view, had multiple servers who were very quick and three spoke broken English. Had the Bouillabaisse and it’s noted on the menu the dish is for one person $65, it’s huge enough to share for 2 people. They show you the fish beforehand, the sauces are very garlicky. Only bottled water, tap wasn’t offered. It was just okay in my opinion… I feel like the atmosphere is what you come there for but not having the view, and the dish being mediocre, I probably wouldn’t recommend.
Enjoyed the coastal atmosphere and delicious seafood. Although most people were understandably having bouillabaise, I had the mixed seafood over a risotto made with fish soup broth. Perfect! Dessert was amazing, and it’s best to save room for it - especially if you’re getting the bouillabaise, which can really fill you up! Servers were very kind in offering to speak in English if desired.
