For us many 2-6 day visits during the past 2+ decades. The endroit, the wonderful food & service have been an absolute constant.
A truly unexpected find.|We needed a half way stop on our way to Nice from Sarlat and chanced on this hotel. You could not find it in the sense of passing traffic as it is in a secluded spot overlooking the valley, all you can hear is Birdsong and all you can see is an unspoiled Valley, beautiful trees and beehives.|There is a swimming pool and much to our amazement, as we thought we were miles from anywhere a restaurant.||The restaurant, was amazingly superb, very reasonably priced and, if we ever make this trip again, we will certainly stop there. ||The staff were delightful, helpful and very smiley.
A stunning old building way up in the hills surrounded by lovely scenery and so peaceful. Sitting on the balcony with a bottle of rose is bliss! The rooms are mostly quite small but quite adequate and some have lovely balconies for relaxing and sunbathing in season. The restaurant is a beautiful old room and the food is as good as any we have come across in France. All so fresh and with splendid ingredients from the local area. beware the portion sizes! They are large but the food is so good one cannot stop halfway and the puddings - oh the puddings........You will sleep well! The owners and their small staff could not be more helpful and our every wish was fulfilled with great charm and humour. We stayed on the way south and again on the way north and cannot wait to return. A real gem.
We could easily run out of superlatives describing our experience of dining in this wonderful place. The location is hard to get to, that's it's only downside. But everything else was so good that you will immediately forget the tricky drive. The picturesque setting alone is worth the effort. We had two different versions of the set menu and couldn't have been more impressed. Of the entrees we had - blue cheese salad and the blood sausage we'd go for the blood sausage - it was to die for - amazing texture and slightly chocolatey. Then it was trout and rice (delicate, beautifully balanced) and the beef cheeks with mashed potato (forget every stringy beef cheek you ever had, these are to die for). Following that it was the ice cream with orange sauce (syrupy, boozy and devine) and the praline in sauce (even better than the ice cream - off the chart wonderful). Be warned: portions are large enough that you may lose your appetite before the desserts and you don't want that! Go with appetite and enthusiasm, you will not be let down! Also, the service was entirely in French but just superb. Every effort was made to make us feel welcome even though we turned up at 6.30pm when they open for dinner at 7.30pm.
My wife and I stayed in the Auberge de Saugras for 2 days at the start of July 2011 and came away feeling so wonderfully relaxed that we turned around and stayed for another 2 days. It’s primarily a top class restaurant encased in a beautiful old stone building out in the middle of nowhere surrounded by beautiful views in all directions. The rooms are not especially luxurious but their crowning glory is the large terrace which is as big as the room. We had breakfast delivered to the room each morning and the smell of freshly baked croissants, breads and cakes was almost as delicious as the taste. We’d sit out on the terrace eating it with large pots of coffee and refreshing orange juice. The sun was shining down all day and we could read away lying on the sun lounger or sip at a nice glass of wine while nibbling on a cheese plate from the restaurant. Nothing was too much trouble for our hostess who was most charming, kind, gentle, and unassuming. Indeed all the staff were lovely. ||The highlight was the evening meal served on a large terrace off the main dining room that caught the evening sun and overlooked the valley below. The restaurant obviously must have a great reputation far and wide because it had constant local diners every night apart from the guests. The slow gentle pace with which the meal was served is perfectly complimented by the impressive wine and cheese selection. Everything is freshly cooked using local produce, including desserts and it shows in the flavours. Three hours of perfect dining each night ending with moonlight stroll to walk it off. ||We found it to be a great base for visiting vineyards and sights in the Herault valley, and Mountpellier is only 20kms away so we had the best of both worlds. You definitely need a car if visiting here.||Overall we had a lovely relaxing time here, and appreciated the sensitive tasteful way the owners have enhanced the Auberge to make it so special. It is, in my opinion, incredible value as we had th
a word of caution ! While our first-time experience two months ago had been a real delight our second stay has been disappointing. The food is still excellent but prices are prohibitive! how can you justify a €5 increase on almost everything in just so little time?
Fantastic place, it is the second time we come here in two years.||Very quiet: there are no other houses around for kms.||Friendly staff.||Very nice swimming pool.||Rooms are OK and most of them have a "private" terrace.||Plenty of parking space.||Excellent restaurant (the place is in the middle of nowhere, so you are likely to stay there for dinner). Outdoor dining in the good season. I recommend wines from Pis Saint Loup.||Reasonable price for the room.
Place was recommended in one of excellent Tourist offices in the area. We booked through them. What should I tell you... Total shock after being 4 days in miserable AirBnb house. After this pleasant SUPRISE we will encourage people to do the same and not rush and reserve something like us( AirBnb ) . We came late and staff was waiting for us. We planed 2 nights but because of extraordinary good place we stayed one extra. We plan to comeback next year for longer period of time. Thanks for having us.
