The visit to this Chapel is like the discovery of a lost treasure as if you are an archaeologist on a dig. There are no large signs that this is an important site known for many years. Instead it feels untouched and newly found. There is great charm to the building and cave hidden behind. I'm amazed that it is not more well known, certainly the painting of Henry II of England and his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine and some members of their family is remarkable. Exactly who is everyone is in the painting is debated. To me it is more important than any number of Mona Lisas.
What a gem these troglodyte caves are in Chinon. The walk up is steep and could be arduous for some. If you drive up from the opposite side the path is excellent and easy. Do check times of opening. Not to be missed. It's free.
Worth a look if you like old churches and historic dwellings, but it is a steep hike up to it for older bodies and hearts. Take it very slowly! Only go when you know it will be open or the climb is for very little gain.
Great place to see the Plantagenets on a day out!
A small chapel and troglodyte dwelling, with some art installations making it a magical experience. No spoilers though. The friendly caretaker doesn't speak English but is full of information and very willing to pass it on. I enjoyed the cycle ride up (tough climb!), the views and the overall experience immensely.
It is on the walk along the hill overlooking Chinon, the views across the valley are excellent, although you must be fit and have a stout pair of shoes
