LES MUSARDISES

Lovely lively bar/restaurant full of locals. Our lunch was Steak Tartaar... and it was one of the best I have had for a very long time. The Tartaar was super fresh and prepared with just the right amount of the usual condiments. The frites were also top quality. The service behind the bar and at table was impeccable and friendly. The atmosphere was real old style bar/resto, and drinking at the bar without eating is also an option. There is the local Anosteke beer on tap, along with ST Bernardus from just across the border, plus Gouden Carolus from further into Belgium. The only negative were the two screens in the bar, playing music vids. The place has so much natural atmosphere, and these screens add nothing but a unneccessary distraction. Apart from this one small complaint, I highly recommend a visit when in beautiful Bergues.

Arrived a bit early for evening meal 6pm and hadn't booked (saturday) The staff found us a table and we sat outside an empty restaurant with a drink until such time as we could eat. We went in to sit down at 7.05 and was served promptly...there was then a constant stream of local residents. By the time we left the place was heaving with a great friendly atmosphere. The food was good and the prices reasonable. If you want something other than pizza and fries, look no further. If we're in the area we will definitely go again.

We happened upon Bergues more by accident than by design, but were so happy we did. Staying in the (excellent) B&B next door, we booked a meal at Le Berguenard, and were richly rewarded. Although both in our 70s we simply loved the free-and-easy atmosphere, and greatly appreciated the hard work of the staff, who kept things flowing with aplomb. We weren't adventurous, choosing an excellent steak (me) and tasty if messy king prawns (her): all well presented and beautifully cooked. We shall book again the next time we're in Bergues, which we most certainly shall be!
