Perched on the rocky promontory on the northwest side of the Baie de la Fresnaye stands the impregnable Château de La Roche Goyon, better known as Fort La Latte. In the 1340s, Étienne III Goüyon, Lord of Matignon, began construction of the castle; the keep, with its distinctive stone roof, was built between 1365 and 1370. Although the castle is highly defensible due to its location, it was nevertheless captured several times, particularly during the Hundred Years' War. During the Wars of Religion of the 16th century, the castle burned down in part and fell into disrepair. It was not until the time of Louis XIV that the castle regained its strategic importance, was renovated, and reinforced with bastions. The fort remained in service until it was sold to private individuals at the end of the 19th century and finally came into the hands of Frédéric Joüon des Longrais in 1931. He has the fort extensively restored and opens it to the public. The fort has served as a backdrop in various films and music videos, and rightly so, as it is a beautiful castle with a scenic location!

A breathtaking medieval fortress by the sea! Fort la Latte is an absolutely stunning place to visit. The location itself is magical, perched on a rocky cliff overlooking the Emerald Coast with panoramic views of the sea that are simply unforgettable. You may need to walk around 15 minutes from the parking area to reach the fortress, but the path is scenic and surrounded by beautiful coastal landscapes and fresh sea air. This place requires a ticket, 8.50€ per adult. You do not need to buy tickets in advance, as you can purchase them at the entry gate. Pets are allowed, making it perfect for visitors who want to bring their furry friends. Inside, the fortress is very well preserved, with fascinating rooms, towers, and medieval architecture that give you a real sense of history. You can climb up to the top of the tower for an incredible view, perfect for photos. The information signs are helpful and available in several languages, making it easy to learn about the castle’s rich past. There is a toilet located near the parking area, which is convenient for visitors before or after the visit. It is a great destination for history lovers, families, or anyone who enjoys exploring picturesque places in Brittany. Highly recommended, especially on a sunny day when the sea turns a brilliant shade of blue! 🌊🏰✨

A mediaeval castle like no other. Well worth the visit and do climb to the top of the tower for fantastic views. You can just imagine what it must have been like back in the day as approaching marauder made menacing moves to take over your Keep...

I've seen a lot of castles, not much different here. I'd really love a tour of the owners rooms that apparently live on site. Also very impressed with the number of movies filmed here! Took photos of the movie read mes for later translation. Wish they had also been written in English. Might improve on that.

Very impressive castle on a beautiful coast! It has been beautifully preserved and restored. Informative signage all around. Amazing views on the coastline and sea. Lot of parking available with a short walk down to the castle entrance.

I stopped by Fort La Latte for a short visit—it’s well worth a quick detour. Perched dramatically on a rocky promontory above the sea, the site offers breathtaking 360° views of the Emerald Coast and Bay of Saint-Malo. The medieval architecture—with its drawbridges, ramparts, and keep—is visually striking, even if you don’t explore every corner. Ideal if you’re looking for a stunning photo opportunity and a taste of Brittany’s coastal history.

Excellent and very worthwhile to see. Be warned there is a walk to get there downhill. Also, for those who don't like heights, it might be a challenge. The Fort is incredibly well kept and amazing views over the bay and sea. The gardens were also very pretty.

On July 31, 2025, we visited the impressive Château de la Roche Goyon, better known as Fort la Latte, located on the rugged coast of Plévenon in Brittany. Built around 1340, this medieval fortress sits dramatically atop a rocky cliff overlooking the Bay of Saint-Malo, near Cap Fréhel. The fort itself is a mighty structure made of grey-pink sandstone, complete with thick walls, sturdy towers, a portcullis, and even a furnace once used to heat cannonballs red-hot. Inside, you'll find old weapons and breathtaking views of the sea. Admittedly, with an entrance fee of €31 (for 2 adults and 2 children), it's not the cheapest outing—and to be honest, you’ve seen most of it within an hour. That said, the fort is excellently preserved and has served as the backdrop for more than 20 films, which comes as no surprise.
