When most people think of Portuguese fortified wines, Port usually comes to mind. But the Muscatel de Setúbal, made just south of Lisbon, is every bit as special and José Maria da Fonseca is its historic home. We were hosted for a private technical tour and the hospitality could not have been warmer. We were greeted by Luiz, the U.S. export director, along with Nunu and Ruben, who gave us a fascinating, in-depth look at the winery’s history and wines. Founded in the early 1800s, José Maria da Fonseca produces everything from Periquita, made from the local Castelão grape, to a stunning range of Muscatel de Setúbal wines. The estate’s heritage is everywhere from antique bottling machines, the 1855 Paris World’s Fair medal, and stories about a ship once used to accelerate wine aging during long voyages. They even helped save the rare Moscatel Roxo grape from extinction. We tasted through several wines, including an elegant 10-year Muscatel enhanced with Cognac, rich with notes of orange peel, honey, and warm spice. Luiz and Nunu joined us for a toast, making the experience feel more like a gathering of friends than a formal visit. Before we left, Luiz even shared his personal number, insisting we reach out if we needed anything during our stay in Portugal, an incredibly generous gesture. If you love history, fortified wines, and authentic Portuguese hospitality, this is a must-visit. An unforgettable experience from start to finish.
Everyone should visit. Amazing vinery dating back to 1855 till this days, producing moscatel and white, red vines. Nice tasting in the end. The guide was super friendly and knowing the story from it core, he showed us impressive garden and brunch/lunch zone, dinner zone and winery itself.

Interesting winery with a rich history and well-organized tours. The wines are good, and the setting is charming, but overall, nothing particularly surprising or unique. Worth a visit if you’re in the area
