The tickets doesn't cost a lot like the two castles near Fussen, and we enjoyed this castle way better. This place has long ancient history based on the geographic location of Annecy. It's well maintained and illustrated. Standing there, feeling the history happened in the room, there was no pretentious. It was an experience that we didn't expect before we walked in.
Great expectations… and disappointments to match As impressive as the castle looks from the outside, the visit itself was just as disappointing. I'll start with what I liked (because this list is way shorter than the one with the negative points): 1. The painting gallery, where you can admire several works (originals, according to the supervisors) by great painters, including a small painting by Fragonard and, most notably, "The Massacre of the Innocents" by Pieter Brueghel the Younger 2. The (temporary) exhibition "L’épopée burgonde" - the arrival and installation of the Burgundians in Haute-Savoie region 3. Behind the castle, there is a spot from which you can admire Lake Annecy surrounded by mountains What I didn’t like: 1. Most of the rooms in the main castle building are completely empty: no furniture, drawings, paintings, period clothing, weapons, courtly objects… nothing but cement and wood 2. An almost total lack of information — the organizers didn’t bother to put up even basic informative panels, so many tourists wandered around speculating: “this was probably where…” 3. Many areas inside the castle are not accessible to the public 4. The old shooting holes have been “completed” with modern windows, which not only spoil the charm of the building, but also prevent visitors from taking photos, as the glass is far from transparent 5. The modern art exhibition is absolutely ridiculous — in fact, it’s not art at all (I’ll upload a picture so you can judge the quality of these so-called “works”). On top of that, the exhibition takes up many rooms on the upper floor — so many that it felt like it would never end 6. The other two buildings of the complex host exhibitions that have nothing to do with a medieval castle; for example, one of them focuses on the fauna of the nearby lake and on fishing vessels… well, if I want to know more about the fish in the lake, I’ll go to a fish-farming museum or a natural science museum, right? 7. In the basement of
Excellent contemporary floor - keep climbing the stairs - it's worth it. There is a wild funny video that greets you. There are also some giant story telling photos that combine reality and fiction (pre AI I believe.) To make it more fun they have magnetic puzzles of those images that you can play around with. Breugel's Massacre of the Innocents was in a temporary exhibit on the 2nd floor when I visited. Seeing it was thrilling! The stairs are very challenging however and the space is not handicap accessible. If you find this helpful please like and follow.
Especially the museum is worth to visit this castle. You get a huge variety of exciting views into modern arts, history and also geographical and natural development of the whole region. You should not miss this. The entrance fee is very fair for what they offer!
Nice castle, we visited the Christmas market at night; nice decorations and awesome view from Annecy lake, the best part is the food area with music and good food and beverages options; The only negative is that if you visit the castle on a midweek day the only option to arrive is by car or walking around 15 to 20min up to the public bus station.
I visited Musée Château d’Annecy . The ticket was affordable, which was good. It is a nice quiet place to visit, with a beautiful building from the outside and a lovely viewpoint. The museum itself wasn’t really for me, but if you have extra time in Annecy, it’s still worth a visit.
At the moment since the actual château part is closed, it's only worth it for the nice views once you go through the first part of the museum. The exhibits are absolutely nothing special or interesting
There’s a fair few pieces of nice work in many mediums. I’m not so much of a fan of the modern artwork, but I loved a lot of the sculptures and landscape paintings. Much prefer the museum opposite.
