Avis
Superb medieval village perched on a rocky spur, overlooks two verdant valleys and the sea. Coming from Bar-sur-Loup, the view of the houses stacked above the ravine is breathtaking. The village suffered Saracen invasions from the 8th century onwards before being liberated by Count William I of Provence. Of the castrum of Torretis, first mentioned in the 11th century, a belfry still remains within the current 15th-century castle, which has housed the Town Hall since 1977. The 12th century Roman church of Saint Gregory borders the large Place de la Libération, while to the south, fortified houses surrounded by two gates secure access to the village. Passing through the clock tower, the old cobbled streets offer a journey back in time. The ornate, flower-filled houses, clustered together, lead to the town hall-castle or the orientation table with its breathtaking view of the Cassan viaduct and the coastline. Tourrettes-sur-Loup owes its nickname, "City of Violets," to the Victoria violet, which brought fame to the town in the 19th century. At the "Bastide aux Violettes" (Violet Farmhouse), this horticultural past lives on: the history of the violet, a greenhouse cultivated by local growers, and a shop selling violet-related products, blooming from October to March, the flower is celebrated each year during the traditional Violet Festival. The town also boasts exceptional natural sites, notably in the Loup gorges, along its banks, and in the heart of the Courmettes estate ...
Lovely quiet atmosphere !
Beautiful medieval city. The houses are perfectly restored. There are some small shops, ateliers and a few restaurants. It’s touristic but not overcrowded. Parking can be difficult but note there’s a second (larger) parking just a minute away. Make sure you try the violet ice cream.
Small Town but just as lovely as St. Paul de vence. luckily not as crowded so feel free to wander around
Stunning village on the mountainside.
--------- Tourrettes-sur-Loup is a beautiful medieval village with a very special charm. As soon as you walk through the narrow streets, you can feel the history and the calm, authentic atmosphere of the place. The old stone houses, small squares, galleries and lovely little shops make the visit very pleasant and varied. From time to time, you also get wonderful views of the surrounding countryside and mountains. What makes the village especially nice is that it does not feel overcrowded or artificial, but has kept its original character. A great place for a relaxed walk, beautiful photos and a quiet break away from the bustle of the Côte d’Azur.
