FIVE STARS – The interior of the Cathedral Santa Maria Assunta in Corsica (Ajaccio), France, is unexpectedly bold, beautiful and grand, especially when compared to the relative understated exterior of the structure. Napoleon Bonaparte's memorial is nearby...
Today we visited the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, an exquisite and historic sanctuary that stands at the heart of Ajaccio’s old town. Built in the late 16th century, this Baroque cathedral is forever linked to Napoleon Bonaparte, who was baptized here in 1771. Yet beyond its historical fame, what moved me most was its sacred atmosphere—a calm and holy space that draws the soul into quiet reverence. Inside, the grandeur is breathtaking. The warm ochre and rose tones of the walls, glowing under soft light from high windows, create a sense of divine warmth. The marble altar, gilded side chapels, and delicate frescoes depicting scenes from the Virgin’s life surround worshippers with beauty that lifts the heart heavenward. Sitting quietly in a pew, I felt the deep peace that only a place of prayer can offer—the silent testimony of centuries of faith, whispered petitions, and thanksgiving rising to God. I found myself reflecting on the countless prayers spoken within these walls—by sailors, mothers, and pilgrims through the generations. It was profoundly moving to add my own prayer to theirs, feeling the presence of the Most Holy enveloping the entire cathedral. This visit reminded me that great churches are not just monuments of art and history, but living places where heaven still touches earth. There is no need to purchase tickets on entry. Highly recommended.
Very interesting little cathedral. Unassuming on the outside. Inside there is some beautifully intricate stucco decor, but a fair bit of it is chalked on - I wonder why? Budget cuts? Plenty of candles to light inside if you have recently lost a loved one/ are worried about your bowel movements following that dodgy sandwich you are next door. There is also a brilliant organ behind you as you walk in, so don't forget to look up and all around you.
Beautiful cathedral once visited by Pope Francis.
Beautiful, deceiving from the outside 😍
In love with this place. I feel so calm and peaceful when I visit this place. Love sitting in silence here.
Beautiful historic church, inside and out. Well worth a visit.
