My wife and I are rather committed advocates of lifelong learning—enthusiastic, some might say to a fault. We move fluidly from one field to another: finishing one postgraduate course only to begin the next, closing one doctorate and promptly opening another (a third already looming on the horizon). Naturally, this produces an alarming volume of notes. And while we embrace modern technology with due respect, nothing quite replaces the quiet dignity of proper paper, a fountain pen, and a well-sharpened pencil. Progress, yes—but not at the expense of pleasure. This is where Oxford proves its worth. A leading European name in notebooks and stationery, it belongs to the long-established Hamelin Group, a family business dating back to 1864 and headquartered in Hérouville-Saint-Clair, Normandy. There is, reassuringly, a sense of heritage behind the clean, contemporary design. Oxford’s signature Optik Paper is genuinely impressive—smooth, bright, and admirably resistant to ink bleed-through. Even the most enthusiastic scribbler (we speak from experience) will struggle to outmatch it. Particularly noteworthy are their notebooks designed to work with the SCRIBZEE app, which allows you to scan, store, and organise notes with surprising efficiency. It is a neat compromise between analogue charm and digital order—civilised, even. Stylish without being ostentatious, practical without being dull, Oxford notebooks strike a pleasing balance.

In October 2024 I went to write with my Pelikan pen and, very weirdly, just could not get the cap off. It was, for some inexplicable reason, stuck fast. I write letters and other things but do not overuse my fountain pens. This was an utterly bizarre situation. Having sent the fountain pen (a gift in c. 2021, worth £120) for repair on 30th October (cost: £25), I wrote to Stone Marketing (the Pelikan repairs representatives) on 3rd February 2025 asking what was happening. They could not tell me and had to liaise with Hamelin Brands, who now own all things Pelikan. As I'd been waiting months for any response I myself contacted the CEO of Hamelin. I realise that the pen might be out of guarantee but I do not think the following is good customer service. I'm on the cusp of tears because a) they simply do not believe I didn't tamper with the pen using superglue, which caused it to get stuck ('customer has tried to repair the writing instrument by himself and glued cap and barrel together' - I simply did not do this but, utterly rudely, they refuse to believe me) b) I have been quoted £70.75 for repairs, which I don't easily have. Their CEO writes, 'Dear Isabella, 'I understand your frustration and I didn't say that you had stuck the cap, but someone did [someone in repairs?]...I wish I could help you, but there's nothing we can do'. Can you imagine an American customer service person saying this ever?!! This is an unbelievable turn of events, and I have left the pen with them.
