A story of lace, from children who made lace in orphanages to machine made pieces. We saw an exhibition of pieces by a Sino French artiste Yinqin Yin. Lots of display pieces to see, a little shop, and café. It's accessible for all, handicapped, elderly, ( my parents 87 and 83 were enchanted )and children. Plenty of places to sit. Maybe a guided visit would be a good idea?
Really interesting museum about lace production in Calais area. There is also temporary exhibition and a restaurant. I was really interesting in the mechanics of production. It was a really nice few hours.
What a disappointment, you purchase a ticket, they ask where are you from…sell you a ticket take your money but do not explain anything. So you go to the demonstration and it’s full on in French. I used my phone to translate. Then the demonstrator totally ignores you, as in no eye contact or offer to show the lace, but did so to the French audience. The lace and clothing on display are beautiful, but the customer service towards the tourist is not there. Maybe go to the Museum of Fine Arts and see excellent customer service.
I wasn't allowed to visit because I was carrying two of my bikepacking bags. They were deemed too big. Of course I wasn't planning on taking them with me. But no clockroom seemed to be available. Neither a secure bicycle parking. The huge reception desk and space could have been used to leave my bags for an hour. However the three people at the desk all agreed that, that was out of the question.
A beautifully set out museum in an old lace factory with its own parking. On the first floor there is the history of lace and upstairs shows the process of mechanically made laces with I believe demonstrations but not on Sundays. Also lace fashions and costume adorned wuth lace. The main captions are in 3 languages so accessible if English speaking. We discovered it's free on the first Sunday of the month which was a bonus. If you're there at lunchtime there's a very good value restaurant there too.
Very interesting museum. Some beautiful lace and machinery exposed. Do not miss the lace making show where they demonstrate how the machine operates. The garments showcased are kept in perfect condition. The gift shop is also a very nice visit in itself since they sell many products made with Calais lace coming from local factories and from the museum lace machines. -M
This place surprised me, I knew nothing about lace when I entered and learned plenty as I viewed and read the supporting information it made me realise how difficult it is even today to make lace. I also saw a demonstration of lace being made, which required plenty of setup I spent 2 hours and given the price I paid its good value for money and an excellent place to visit even if you are not a lady. Thanks to the staff for an interesting couple of hours.
This is a great museum that teaches you about lace, how lace was made and is still made today and showcases lace throughout the years. There is a demonstration of the traditional lace machine in action. The temporary exhibit currently there is really an awesome play between lace and art.
