Nice and huge church. Many small altars dedicated to saints and roof paintings.
Beautiful architecture and historical landmark indeed
Beautiful peaceful church
Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação, built in 1708 on the site of a demolished section of Lisbon's 14th-century city walls, was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake and rebuilt under architect Manuel Caetano de Sousa, with works continuing until 1873. The late Baroque–neoclassical façade is articulated by six Corinthian pilasters and crowned by a triangular pediment with a relief of the Annunciation. The single-nave interior has four lateral chapels and barrel vaulting; the chancel altarpiece holds a sculpture of Our Lady of the Incarnation.
This church has a bright & airy interior, with a baroque altarpiece and beautifully painted ceilings. Also worth seeing are the many traditional tiles that decorate the church
Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação is well worth a visit if you want to see Lisbon beyond the main touristic landmarks. It is in the center and offers a calm space. WHat I liked the most was the ceiling ofg the church - see in Photos. The interior reveals carefully preserved 18th-century Azulejos that depict scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. These panels are ahighlight and provide both artistic and historical context. The ceiling painting and gilded altars are well balanced and not overwhelming, making it easy to appreciate the details at a relaxed pace. The church also tells part of Lisbon’s story of resilience, having been rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake.
Beautiful church, rebuild after the 1755 earthquake. Classicism/baroque style. Elaborate, colorful decorations painted on the ceiling, arches with statues of saints along both sides of the interior. Accessible for wheelchairs! Open most days of the week during the day and early evening. Please maintain respectful silence during masses held in the church.
There are several interesting churches you can visit in the Chiado neighbourhood including the Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation (Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação) located at Largo de Chiado and Largo Luis de Camões. Historically, this church dates back to 1708 when it was originally constructed. It was rebuilt after being destroyed by the earthquake of 1755 and features a Neo-classical facade topped with a ornamental pediment. The interior hosts Baroque and Neo-classical features including a single nave with side altars, separated by marble inlay and inset columns. There is a nice ceiling fresco and main altarpiece image of the Lady of the Incarnation that is the work of the highly regarded Portuguese sculptor Machado de Castro. You'll also find a screen with information about the church history and art and other highlights which you can read during your visit.
