Fête des Lumières is both rather well and very poorly organized. Crowd control is good. However, most streets near the exhibits are one-way and a 20 minutes detour bouncing from one roadblock "Access Interdit" to another one, until one admits the failure to solve the maze and gives up just to shoals more crowds back to their hotel. When one spends on the weekend here for a family well over a €1,000 most of which, aside for TGV tickets, is captured by the local economy, the glaring lack of meaningful maps from the City Administration on the official Fête des Lumières website is very regrettable. Some of the exhibits are also quite mediocre.
The Hôtel de Ville de Lyon, or Lyon City Hall, is one of the city’s most impressive architectural landmarks—grand, historic, and perfectly situated between Place des Terreaux and the Opéra de Lyon. Built in the 17th century and later restored after a fire, this building is a showcase of French Baroque elegance and civic pride. Its ornate façade, intricate sculptures, and imposing bell tower make it a standout feature of central Lyon. Every detail, from the symmetrical windows to the sculpted allegories and coats of arms, reflects the building’s historic importance and artistic richness. It’s especially stunning when illuminated at night, casting a golden glow over the square.
A beautiful town hall in Lyon, France. We loved our visit. The architecture is just stunning. It is located in a beautiful square with an amazing fountain and other beautiful buildings. Very historical.
The Hôtel de Ville and Place des Terreaux in Lyon are absolutely stunning! The architecture is magnificent, especially at dusk. It's a truly grand and historic spot, perfect for a leisurely stroll and admiring the beauty of Lyon. A must-see!
What an exceptional building from the exterior. Unfortunately it was closed and we couldn't gain entry inside, but appreciated the water feature and huge fountain in the foreground. It really makes such an incredible backdrop to the city.
Delightful architecture and so really accessible to the public. I popped into a small courtyard space by chance to find a ribbed ceiling and what would have been s nice space to chill out!
Not open to the public, except for special tours Hôtel de Ville is the city hall of Lyon. It was completed in 1672, designed by architect Simon Maupin. After a fire in 1674, it was rebuilt and modified by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, the chief architect of Versailles. Its baroque façade features sculpted figures, grand columns, and a central clock tower originally crowned by a statue of Louis XIV, later replaced with one of Henry IV.
A Majestic Gem in Lyon - I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Hotel de Ville Lyon in Lyon and I must say, it left me absolutely mesmerized! This stunning building is a testament to the grandeur of French architecture and is truly a sight to behold. The ambiance of the Hotel de Ville Lyon is simply breathtaking, from the ornate details of the exterior to the sophisticated elegance of the interior. The service was top-notch and the staff were always friendly and accommodating. The rooms were spacious, well-maintained, and equipped with all the necessary amenities to make your stay comfortable. The quality of the products and services offered was impressive, ensuring that guests get their money's worth. The only criticism I have is that the food in the hotel's restaurant was a little underwhelming, which is why I deducted one star from my rating. However, the restaurant's ambiance made up for it, and the drinks were fantastic! What makes Hotel de Ville Lyon truly special is its rich history and unique features that set it apart from other hotels in the area. The grand staircase, chandeliers, and exquisite artwork all add to the hotel's charm. My impression of Hotel de Ville Lyon was so positive that I would encourage the owners to offer discounts or other incentives to loyal customers. If you're visiting Lyon, be sure to make Hotel de Ville Lyon a part of your itinerary. It's an experience you won't soon forget.
