I visited this castle because it is my name sake. It's free and in the middle of Caen. It's not a traditional castle because it doesn't include a large manor but the grounds, ramparts and chapel are really nice and wonderful views. It was built for defense purposes mainly. Is it a must-see? No, but if you name is "de Caen" then yes. Additionally there is an increadibly beautiful church (St. Pierre) right across the street worth visiting. Both the castle and church are free while parking (Indigo) is not.

Well worth a visit. Huge! Norman-Castle-Central! Coming from Ireland, with it's uncountable Norman castle ruins, this was special. 1,000 yrs of history on display. Don't miss the immersion visual show in the Great Hall...amazing. And all free. Well done Caen.👏

This historic site is really interesting with it having a medieval castle ( with its walls still being mostly intact) and a museum to look around. I really enjoyed looking around and being able to have a first person experience with one of Caens most historic landmarks. The views of the city below are beautiful with you being able to see miles in every direction. Would definitely recommend for lovers of history.

Inside, there are several playgrounds for children and a nice park with benches where you can relax and rest. Within the walls, you’ll also find a café and a museum, and you can walk along the entire rampart. From the tower, you can enjoy a wonderful view of Caen from above.

The castle is very well preserved and curated. I could imagine how the occupants lived. I enjoyed the modern touches that have been added in recent times and it is situated right in the city with immediate access to the wider area.

I had no idea so much of human history took place in this region of France. Early humans, neanderthals, the Gauls, the Romans, the Franks, the Norse, it just goes on and on. The museum has a wonderful collection of artifacts and tells the story of the area in just the right level of detail. For those who speak only English, be ready to be translate many of the signs and labels on the displays with your phone. The ramparts of the castle itself make for a lovely view of the city.

Not much of a castle but mostly ruins and some wall and courtyard structures still standing along with some minarets. A nice place for a hangout and picnic during the nice weather! This was a quick visit and free as well.

No need for tickets for visiting the fort and the ramparts. Beautifull view of Caen and lights up at night. A piece of history that is woth knowing about!
