Beautiful small medieval walled city, cobbled streets, artisan shops (and the usual tourist ones). Visit to the chateau fort highly recommended, very interesting and quite unique. Despite many tourist activities we still loved the vibe here, good eateries and bars, nice place to walk, the ramparts, the city itself, activities for kids and families. Loved it! From camping Europe it's best to enter from the Port Aude gate - there is an epicerie and nice restaurants just there at the foot of the walls too. We didnt enjoy the Bastide Saint Louis, not much of interest to see and do in terms of architecture, historical places, shops etc.
An amazing historical site! So wonderfully preserved! The facilities are pretty good in the area surrounding the actual Cité de Carcassonne (there are some reasonable eateries if look for them). Inside the walls, the information is extensive & informative. Walking the ramparts is quite an undertaking, but definitely worth the effort!
A short 30 minute train ride from Narbonne, took a bus and arrived straight at the door step. There is a market village surrounded the palace part with lots of eatery, cafe, icecream shops, small vendors and arts and crafts shops. You can easily spend 4-5 hours outside and spend another 2-3 hours inside the paid castle, which cost 19 euro to entry and you can walk along the castle wall to see the beautiful view. You can easily scan the QR code And buy the ticket on your phone which is then no queue to get in. It is definitely worth travelling there to visit! I really had a great time. There is this shop up the end where they sell made in France tea towel as souvenir and they are very pretty, I snapped up six of them.
The full fairytale experience....... As we we crossed the lovely old bridge from the lower town, we got our first glimpse of the walls of the medieval city, the walk up is quite enjoyable, passing a streets full of eateries enticing passer-by's with the local favourite.........., it is easy to spend a whole day within the walls, starting with a guided tower, visiting the basilica and learning all about the the history with enjoyable stories, next is the not missed, walking the walls/ramparts, a visit to the Medieval camp, is fun, just not for the kids, there are many restaurants, however our go to is the cite boulangerie, the bread is divine and there are many treated to be tempted with to finish the day, just walking the cobblestone streets, watching the kids with there sword and shield, wearing a helmet walking the streets sourced from the many souvenir shops. all in all a wonderful experience.
Very nice midevil city. Wish there was more authentic souvenirs. Too much chinese crap in the stores. Very nice soaps and lavendar. Authentic food in some spots. Train was informative.
One of my favorite places in the world. I love all about it. If you are into reading, read the Laberynth, by Kate Mosse before visiting and I promise the story will come alive!!! Very crowded in the summer. I went at the end of November and it was so peaceful!
What an amazing city! I really enjoyed walking around - there is so much to see, many places to shop, & wonderful cafes for food & drinks. I definitely want to come back & spend more time exploring!
Part of me wanted to be snobbish about this reconstruction.... yes packed with fellow tourists and shops selling cheap trinkets... but also artisans with good handcrafted items... heck even found an outdoor bar with a dj and lots of local people having fun... and frankly the structure itself is spectacular.
