Already in the 3rd century, some fortifications, a castellum, were constructed at this site. Later, this huge castle was built and expanded through the years. Occupied by the English during the Hundred Years War, sold by the English, it became an important Naval base and part still is and off limits to visitors. There is a well signed tour you follow through the castle. There are many galleries inside with the interesting history of the place. At the end of that tour, there are some beautiful large wooden sculptures

I have visited this museum, and would highly recommand to visit it : the view of the harbour is splendid, the history of the location is very interesting and for boat models lovers, there are pieces worth seeing!

Loved the museum. Lots of history from more than 600 years ago. I was expecting a little bit more maritime stuff. It is a beautiful castle with lots of interest things to see.

Lovely place to get history a lesson on the area of Brest. The Chateau covers a huge area and housed inside is the Marine Museum. Naval history at its best! Models of ships used throughout France's conquests and exploration expeditions are on display. Plenty to keep the kids engaged. The views of the bay are fabulous as well.

Oldest Maritime museum in Europe if not the world. Housed within a castle. Only 7euros for adults - excellent value. Good history of the castle and the dock areas in addition to the navy and the different types of ships. Get the audio guide which is free and comes in different languages.

Travel through 17 years of history In the exceptional setting of the castle of Brest, the National Maritime Museum houses a unique heritage reflecting the great naval adventure Arsenal of Brest and the French Navy. In recently renovated rooms, visitors can discover the masterpieces of naval decoration, Lapérouse expedition, life convicts or emblematic of contemporary Navy ships. The tour combines internal and external, to assess the wealth of collections, views of the harbor and city and architectur the castle foundations Gallo-Roman fortifications of Vauban through the curtains, the bastion and walkway is a journey through 17 centuries of history that offers the visitor

Very nice maritime museum and castle tour with lots of local history. Perfect for history lovers, particularly those interested in learning about the maritime history of the region.

I love to visit this types of museum. But found this one quite boring. Short to no signs in English (and only a few in German), you got a audioguide in English, but the guide itself was slow and not always that interesting in my opinion. Many many stairs into spaces and rooms that was sparsely equipped with forced facts. Would not recommend because I feel like you can visit better museums in this region and get more experiences for your time. The personnel was nice. I found no toilets while visiting.
