Beautiful city. I am so glad I stopped here before I left Europe. This town is everything I though France would be. Narrow winding streets, cathedrals, amazing food.... I'll be back!
The train station is magnificent, resembling a giant glass dome situated in the heart of the city. The platforms are arranged in a straight line on either side of the passageway; you can simply enter the station and go directly to the platforms. There are no security checks or other procedures. Trains depart every few minutes, making it easy to catch trains to nearby Basel, Paris, or other German cities – transfers are very convenient. The train station square is a large area where you can sunbathe, and there are many restaurants nearby. The church is just a 10-minute walk away. It's a very nice place.
🎄 Atmosphere & Charm Strasbourg proudly calls itself the “Capital of Christmas,” and for many visitors this reputation feels well-earned: the entire city centre is transformed with thousands of lights, festive shop windows, decorations, and the scent of cinnamon and mulled wine in the air. The historic streets around Place Broglie, Place Kléber and near the Cathedral offer a picturesque setting — especially at dusk — that often feels like a living storybook winter wonderland. However — some visitors find that the festive decoration can be underwhelming in places and that the overall feel isn’t always as magical as expected; a few reviews describe the lights and displays as sparse or flat compared to other markets. ⸻ 🛍️ Stalls & Shopping The market spans multiple squares with hundreds of wooden chalets selling: • Traditional Alsatian foods and mulled wine • Crafts and souvenirs • Seasonal gifts and ornaments • Local specialties like gingerbread and pretzels That said, some visitors note that many stalls sell similar products and that unique, artisanal items can be hard to find unless you hunt for the smaller markets scattered around the city. ⸻ 🍷 Food & Drink Sampling local food — from pretzels and gingerbread to vin chaud (mulled wine) — is a highlight for many. The drinks and snacks help enhance the festive mood, especially on chillier evenings. Tip: Bring cash for smaller stalls, as not all vendors take cards. ⸻ 🧍♀️ Crowds & Practicalities Strasbourg at Christmas can be very crowded, especially on weekends and during peak hours. Walking between areas often means moving with the flow of people, and queues for popular stands — like mulled wine — are common. Hotels and transport also need early booking in December, as the season fills up fast.
Very lively vibrant and beautiful city, with lots to discover the cathedral, the markets and surroundings are worth visiting.
DEPLORABLE Service at Strasbourg Station (ACCUEIL VOYAGEURS HANDICAPES SNCF) Date of Incident: Friday, March 20, 2026 Time: 16:45. I am deeply shocked and appalled by the treatment my family received at the Accueil Voyageurs Handicapés in Strasbourg station. We went there to seek assistance for my cousin, who was traveling with her son—a child with a physical disability who cannot walk. While my French husband stepped away for a moment, the office reopened. A male staff member (small stature) and a woman (curly hair) immediately ordered us to "get out," claiming it was "not a waiting room." They were incredibly rude and aggressive. Despite my attempts to explain that I was calling my husband back to translate and that we were there for disability assistance, they chased us out in a belittling and dehumanizing manner. Key points of our experience: 1 Lack of Empathy: Even after my husband arrived to speak French, they continued to be rude and defensive. 2 Poor Observation: They claimed they "didn't see" the child had a disability, despite it being clearly visible. 3 Failure of Mission: The primary role of this office is to assist vulnerable travelers. Instead, they created a hostile environment for the very people they are paid to help. Even if a disability is "invisible," staff in this specific department should be trained in patience and customer service. To be treated like a nuisance when seeking help for a disabled child is unacceptable. SNCF needs to review the training and conduct of the staff working this shift. No family deserves to be treated with such disdain.
Amazing, Petite France 🇫🇷 was magical, a step into a time where horses and walking were the norm. Cafés, restaurants, shops and lots of opportunities to be wowed by beautiful buildings and reflective waters. The flowers frame and add the soft happy colors. Notre Dame Cathedral, a walk around the botanical gardens to be in nature. There's so much to take in if you enjoy walking. I recommend staying in the city by old town. It's nice to step away and take a breather sometimes. Enjoy!
A city like many others, but on the crossroads between France and Germany and the center of Europe, one week per month. Lots of history here, good public transport, nice canal rides, plenty of tourists, enough restaurants to choose from, good connections via train, plane and car. Take a walk thru the city, always a good option.
The weather made it a fab six day city break. Only knew of the EU parliament which was impressive. Canal cruise, choice of restaurants, picturesque canals and wine tastings were a massive bonus. Very walkable city centre makes it a great city to visit and re-visit.
