The Théâtre Antique de Vienne is a staggering testament to Roman ingenuity. Built in the 1st century AD, this massive stone semicircle once hosted 13,000 spectators and remains one of the largest ancient arenas in France. Its preservation is remarkable; the steep tiers of seating still provide incredible acoustics that bring the annual Jazz à Vienne festival to life. While the ruins themselves are immersive, the true scale of the site is best appreciated from a distance. The views of the theatre are best from the Belvédère de Pipet, perched directly above the arena. From this height, you get a breathtaking panoramic shot of the Roman geometry set against the backdrop of the Rhône River and the tiled roofs of the city. It is an essential stop for anyone looking to capture the perfect blend of ancient history and French landscape.
Even passing by, the theatre looks very grand and impressive. Soil erosion and landslides has completely covered the structure by Middle Ages. Targeted excavations began in 1908 and theater was restored and reopened in 1938.
Ale to see Avenged Sevenfold. Probs the best organised outdoor arena in France. Queue moved along with no hassle. Security did a banging job and the Lyonnaise sausage hot dog was delicious. Good beer too. What’s not to love.
Very interesting Roman theatre with great views from the top out over Vienne. Only €3 entry fee & well worth the visit.
The place itself is really magical. Was there for a concert and honestly sunset and music in this scenery was just perfect. Not to mention the obvious top notch sound quality even far up. Everything was easily accessible and the organisers really did a good job of allocating the space. Loved every second of the show 😻
Great Jazz Festival 2025. Went to see Parov Stellar. A little hot due to the heat wave - take water and a hat.
Fantastique venue for jazz festival "Jazz a Vienne". Superb location and acoustics, logistics are great with great beers, local food (fries with goat cheese sauce 😍), also great ice creams (chartreuse, banane flambée...), with a very smart setup so that you barely have to wait to get drinks or food. Love it all the way
Another well-preserved display of Roman architecture that was (re)discovered in the last century. It makes you want to yell, “Are you not entertained?” from the stage, even if in “The Gladiator,” that was done on circuses/coliseums and not in amphitheaters. For those needing a workout, I recommend climbing all the way up to the top - buns of steal for free! When you’re back on the streets, look out for tiny copper circles on the floor with a sort of a tree motive: follow these markers around Vienne for other beautiful things to see!
