Whilst it is possible to visit to the Medieval City for free, walk around, enjoy the shops, have something to eat - In our opinion a visit is not complete without doing the walk along the ramparts/walls and visiting the museum/castle. It is well worth the cost - we got the partner rate of 11.50 due to having the Carca Pass - but it is also possible to get the discounted rate with a TGV ticket - we didn’t know this. Also - scan the code and buy online - we tried to go one day and there was a massive after-lunch queue and it was school holidays. We went back to our apartment and booked online - 1000% easier. We went early - 0930, opening time, to beat the crowds and we actually had the walls to ourselves for the first 30 minutes - we took our time - probably a couple of hours including the museum, and totally enjoyed the experience.

A beautiful, walkable, well-restored and preserved medieval town. Lots of lovely shops and restaurants. The castle and walk along the ramparts is a must!

Carcassonne is a remarkably well-preserved medieval fortress—an architectural treasure that transports you back to a time of knights, sieges, and solemn grandeur. With its towering ramparts, labyrinthine cobbled streets, and commanding turrets, the Cité inspires awe and reflection in equal measure. One can almost hear the echo of battle cries across the stone walls and imagine the many brutal conflicts that once raged here. It must be said that the commercial presence within the citadel is hard to miss; a host of souvenir shops and tourist-focused restaurants line the main thoroughfares. However, one suspects that such trade is a necessary compromise, essential perhaps, to the ongoing preservation and vitality of this historic site. If the alternative were a slow decline into disrepair, then the presence of the occasional gelato stand is a price worth paying. What truly elevates the experience, though, is time. Carcassonne reveals very different faces depending on the hour. By day, it can feel bustling and animated; by night, it becomes quiet, atmospheric, and almost otherworldly. To fully appreciate its magic, I highly recommend staying overnight within the city walls. An evening stroll beneath lantern-lit battlements, long after the crowds have thinned, offers a sense of peace and authenticity that simply cannot be found during peak tourist hours. In all, Carcassonne is both haunting and beautiful. She is a living monument to a distant past, well worth lingering in.

The city itself is beautiful and well preserved but full of tourists. Full in a level that you can’t enjoy. I don’t recommend to visit in summer time.

What an amazing (and relatively little known) city! It looks like a beautiful, giant movie set designed for a Middle Ages movie... ... But it is a REAL city, with houses, monuments, streets and walls dating all the way back to the Roman empire. I strongly recommend a double visit, both by night and by day.

Carcassonne is divided into three zones - the castle, the cité below the castle, and the bastide on the other side of the River Aude. It is steeped in history and we enjoyed wandering around the old streets. Lots of restaurants to cater to the tourists.
