Saint-Lazare Cathedral is a famous 12th-century Romanesque cathedral in Autun, France. Built to house the relics of Saint Lazarus, it became an important pilgrimage site. The cathedral is best known for its remarkable sculptures by Gislebertus, especially the Last Judgment above the main entrance, as well as its Gothic spire and richly decorated interior. It is considered one of the greatest examples of medieval Burgundian architecture.
An impressive cathedral showcasing a seamless blend of late Romanesque and early Gothic architecture. The style is remarkably uniform, with a beautifully restored and captivating main portal. A true ‘must-see’ in this tranquil city, which also features Roman remnants like a theater, city gates, and ancient walls.
Beautifully restored cathedral church. Some brilliant new stained glass. No visitors Sundays unless attending services.
Brilliantly restored and lit. One can see the carvings on the portal and on the capitals as never before. It looks absolutely lovely.
Impressive late Romanesque, early Gothic cathedral, very homogeneous in style. The main portal is well restored and very interesting. A "must see" in a quiet city, which also offers Roman remains: theater, city-gates, walls,...
Beautiful cathedral, worth the visit in a charming town
So interesting the details Who knows this sign? Maybe from Pilgrims?
A well restored Romanesque cathedral hiding behind later additions. Simple and clean lines. Capitals and main entrance carved by Gislebertus in the 1100s.
