So cool. There are 4 areas to see here; not sure which is public vs private. We were planning to take a tour in Schoenenbourg - but hit a snag earlier in the day and ran out of time. You can only see outside - although a light came on inside when we got closer and if you bring a bright flashlight you can see in a bit farther - the beauty of this place is the quietness out in the middle of nowhere which is sometimes better than a tour. Very interesting and eerie to see. I believe you can set up a tour if you email the group whom maintains the fort in advance and arrange with one of their historians.
We turned up out of season planning to look outside but were very lucky. A kind German gentleman showed us round, avoiding photographers who were also visiting. We all really lived the tour and can say it is a big highlight of our holiday The fort is enormous and well worth a visit. Thanks to all of the volunteers who made it possible to visit this interesting piece of history.
Beautifully preserved Gross Ouvrage cared for by a tiny but really committed team of volunteers. We enjoyed a 3.5 hour guided tour in English with the wonderful Sylvie and got to see every part of the gallery level and one of the artillery fighting blocks. Superb!
It was closed when I got there, no big deal. I was going to stay overnight in the large carpark until a boy-drifter arrived to show how bad he is. Obviously not the first time he had been there and so I left
A very important historical site, but quite an eerie and depressing place. A suitable destination for people who are really interested in history. The forest around the site is pleasant and cool. It is located close to a French nuclear power plant.
A must see if you are in the region! The tour to the bunker is super impressive and informative! And its for sure worth the money! More people need to know about this site and help fund them to keep doing the great job of restoring the maginot line! 10/10
Such an impressive sight to see amongst the woods of Cattenom. There are many similar structures in the small surrounding area of woods. Ok, its there for the wrong reason but it's history and allows us to remember those that fought for us. Currently only open on Sunday afternoons to visit inside. I haven't ventured in yet but certainly hope to.
Not opened cause I was there at a holiday. But fine, cause I just want get a glimpse. Nice the open this for the public, that history should not repeat itself.
