Four hours, roughly twenty-four kilometres of underground chalk the Romans started cutting before France was an idea, and a guide who knew the place down to the louse. The Veuve Clicquot “La Grande Dame” tour is the rare luxury experience that earns the word. You go down into former Gallo-Roman quarries kept at a steady cellar cool, past a relief a man reportedly went blind carving, and you come back up understanding how champagne is actually made as well as how it got to this state. Our guide walked us through the riddling, the hand-harvest rules, the vines grafted onto American rootstock that saved the entire region, and a pest-control method best described as engineered heartbreak for moths. Lunch in the estate garden was pickled carrots, hummus, and warm bread (all varying shades of orange!) on a tablecloth the exact yellow of the label. Then a magnum of the 1990 La Grande Dame arrived, the colour of late afternoon, tasting of walnuts and dates and a summer that no longer exists. I have paid more for less and felt worse about it. P.S. I’m a food researcher and enamoured with the incredible real-life Madame Clicquot, who’s well-worth the deep dive, so: ✍️ Substack “Pretty Girls Eat Guts” for the full article! A beautiful place and learnt a lot about the history of Veuve Cliquot. Well worth it!! Martin was our guide and he was wonderful. Very friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommended!!! A great store where you can buy the Veuve merchandise!!
A fantastic experience at Veuve Clicquot Champagne House – my first time doing the tour and it really impressed. Martin was an outstanding guide: engaging, knowledgeable, and struck the perfect balance between history and storytelling, which brought the whole experience to life. The cellars themselves are incredibly atmospheric and well worth seeing. Small tip – bring a light jumper, as it’s noticeably cooler underground. As an independent travel agent, this is a tour I’d confidently recommend to clients visiting the region – polished, informative, and a great introduction to Champagne.
Lovely visit to Veuve Clicquot in Reims. We had the guided tour of the cellars plus a tasting session. The guide was very informative and historical. So much to learn in a one hour tour. The size and scale of the cellars is mind blowing. The gift shop was also very nicely laid out with many Veuve champagnes and other merchandise on sale. Lots of photo opportunities were also available outside the gift shop as well. Well worth a visit if you’re ever in the Reims area.
This was a lot of fun and then there was good food at the end. Fascinating tour of the caverns where the champagne is stored with a bunch of interesting facts about the company and the champagne. Our guide was excellent. After the tour we moved to the cafe and had a delicious burger and a bottle of rose champagne because that's what you do. Thank you Emma. Yasin and Said for your excellent service.
We booked the “The Art of Aging" tour at Veuve Clicquot in Reims. We were able to taste 4 exceptional vintage champagnes, a 1995, 1998, a 2015 Brut, and a 2015 Rose Brut, but what really made the day stand out was our guide, Lisa. She was fantastic—engaging, highly attentive, and answered every single question we threw at her with a perfect blend of expertise and charm. Honestly, the whole staff at this venue was superb, every person we ran into who worked there seemed happy to greet and engage with us. If you are looking for a deep dive into vintage champagnes, book this tour, hopefully you get Lisa. Also, treat yourself to a post tour drink at the bar outside and sit under one of the umbrellas.
The story behind this brand is actually very inspiring! We got the 4 glasses tasting and it was amazing, our tour guide was so kind and so passionate about champagne- which made us appreciate it even more. Highly recommend it and remember to book the tour at least 1 week in advance 👍
I visited Veuve Clicquot while in Reims, although I didn’t take part in the tour — and there was still plenty to enjoy. I was actually visiting on business and taste testing the champagnes for my luxury event I was organising. It was a great chance to network with staff and initiate a collaboration. The space itself is really well set up, with a mix of indoor and outdoor areas to explore. There’s a shop with a good range of merchandise — including things like their signature champagne tins, along with accessories like towels and hats, which makes it easy to pick up something a bit different. Outside, there are relaxed seating areas and a bar where you can sit and enjoy a drink, which gives it a really nice atmosphere without needing to commit to a full tour. There’s also a restaurant on site serving great food, and the grounds themselves are really well kept, making it a nice place to walk around and take your time. Perfect if you’re in Reims and want to experience one of the bigger champagne houses in a more relaxed way. I’d definitely visit again.
