If you love, or just have an interest in, illuminated manuscripts, this museum is a real treat. Additionally, the relationship between the scribes at Avranches and those at Mont Saint-Michel are fascinating.
Fascinating museum mainly based around historic manuscripts and books from Mont St Michel, also covers a lot of the history of the island. We went there for my mother who is a keen historian and saw a lot in common with Canterbury, but even the teenager in the group enjoyed it. Really worth doing if you're going to Mont St Michel, maybe beforehand so you have more understanding of the place when you visit. Also had cold water available and good toilets.
Worth a visit if you are in the area. Avaranche and Mont Saint Michel are joined at the hip and this museum really helps bring to life the life and work of the monks who lived there. Each room also has a small table for kids so it's feasible to visit with the kids!
Brilliant place for learning about the history of Mont Saint Michel and the lives of the Monks there. Entry ticket price reduced with full ticket for Mont Saint Michel.(Usually 9€ reduced to 5€) On the way to the museum there is a small castle that you can walk up and find some sculptures as well as a small ? library There are lockers for visitors to use for free. The place opens at 10am and withing walking distance of the carpark in the town centre. I particularly enjoyed the virtual guide (included with full ticket). Really glad I went out of the way to visit this place. Staff are very nice too😃
This museum is the highlight of Avranches. Absolutely worth a detour especially after a visit to Mont St Michel, as it shows off the books that the monks were creating. Bring the kids - there’s something for everyone. Tip! Keep your Mont St Michel tickets and show them here.
Friendly staff and well thought out exhibits. From a British point of view although the audio guide is good and the computer stations are fun, none of the written info is available in English ( why should it be?) So much detail is lost. Original manuscripts are stunning, and rotated from storage to help preserve them.
Loved the layout of the museum, great interactive information on the displays, learned so much about the Mont, the monks and those manuscripts are a treasure.
A very modern and interactive place. Exposition well done. Just a few of Mont Saint Michel Abbey volumes exposed. It does not give you a sense of the whole collection. Nice temporary photo exhibition.
