The Chapelle Impériale (Imperial Chapel), also known as Cappella Imperiali, is a historic Roman Catholic chapel and mausoleum in Ajaccio, Corsica. Built between 1857 and 1859 by order of Napoleon III, it serves as the final resting place for several members of the Bonaparte family, fulfilling the last wishes of Cardinal Joseph Fesch. The chapel is part of the Palais Fesch complex and is typically accessible with a combined ticket for the Musée Fesch. Located at 50-54 Rue Cardinal Fesch, 20000 Ajaccio, France. Daily from 9:15 AM to 6:00 PM. Access is often included with a ticket to the Palais Fesch (approx. €8 for adults). The Crypt: The octagonal crypt houses the remains of Cardinal Fesch, Maria-Letizia Bonaparte (Napoleon’s mother), and Charles Bonaparte (Napoleon’s father). Designed by Alexis Paccard, the building features a Latin cross plan and is constructed from local Saint-Florent stone. A massive dome decorated with trompe-l'œil and grisaille frescoes by Jérôme Maglioli. A Coptic Christ on the altar, a unique artifact brought back from Egypt by Napoleon I. Stained-glass windows that blend ecclesiastical symbols with imperial insignia like the Eagle. Consecrated on September 9, 1860, the chapel was designated a Monument Historique in 1924. While Napoleon I himself is buried at Les Invalides in Paris, this site remains the primary dynastic sanctuary for his family in his birthplace of Ajaccio.

Worth a visit
