La Caserne Chanzy has many of the ingredients of a memorable hotel: a striking central location opposite Reims Cathedral, an impressive building, and a distinctive design concept rooted in Champagne. On paper, it is exactly the sort of property one would expect to work well as part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection and as a hotel included in the MICHELIN Guide hotel selection. Unfortunately, our stay fell well short of the standard implied by both. The most disappointing aspect was breakfast. Service for cooked items was extremely slow, with dishes taking over 20 minutes even when we were first in the queue. Some dishes were also poorly prepared: fried eggs were burnt, the Eggs Benedict was badly executed, and the wider hot food offering was underwhelming. We were also concerned by the freshness and presentation of certain cold items, including salmon and meats, and by the apparent lack of proper quality control. Other items, such as sausages and potatoes, were greasy, soggy or unappealing. Overall, breakfast was one of the weakest we have experienced in France over the last decade. Dinner was much better from a culinary perspective. The food itself was of a very high standard, and the kitchen team clearly has real talent. However, the service again failed to match the quality of the food. Our wine order was not taken by the sommelier, and after a long wait, we had to order through another member of staff. Later, the petit fours were missed entirely. These are not minor details at this level of hotel and restaurant. We also had a persistent noise issue in our room, apparently from the ventilation system, which made the room uncomfortable. The matter had to be raised more than once before it was addressed. When offered a room change, we were also surprised by the difference between rooms in the same category, as the size and fixtures appeared noticeably inconsistent. Overall, the hotel has the foundations of something excellent: the building, location and design
DO NOT STAY HERE … ||Booked this hotel because it had a 5 star rating. ||I booked through Booking.com - because it was significantly cheaper than the hotel site . |Not through my Marriot gold member account . ||On check in - I’m told no breakfast is not included . €590 x2 nights but no B fast !! |Harsh I think ||I then realised - I was a gold member & informed staff member Pierre ( check in guy ) of my mistake||I have to say - he was in a foul mood & would not upgrade me or give me breakfast ( which is include in gold member ) ||Insisting I forfeit any benefit by booking with booking .com ||I do understand that people may have problems in their personal lives - but do not take it out on customers .as I feel this guy did . ||I tried to reason with him that I was maybe due some benefits when you enrol in hotel partnerships as I had done with Marriot - but he would not listen - finally offering me x2 glasses of champagne !!! - awfully patronising . Which I politely declined . ||The whole checking in experience was stressful for me & my Stay was already ruined . |It was my 38th year wedding anniversary treat for me & my wife ||It won’t put me off Marriot - but staff need more training . ||Hotel itself . ||Room is tiny - overlooking a roof ! ||Fridge has x1 water |1 x wine & 1 beer . ||No pen , paper . |Tiny bedside table , phone not working !||Absolutely no way is this a 5 star hotel . ||Now Im a well travelled guest - but this rating is very suspicious ?? ||I understand that a hotel has to tick the boxes but they are taking the piss here . ||So yes a decent restaurant attached - but vastly overpriced ! ||Gym - yes but as small as a bedroom !! |( no water in machine when I visited ) ||Spa - ( ha - how I laughed ) even smaller than a small bedroom . |Not available to me when I requested - as it is full - there were 6 people in it . Basically a sauna, steam room in a corridor with a plunge pool . |No swimming pool - but another small room to charge you up to €200
Location is great just at front of the Cathedral. Rooms with the view are very small and the price is elevated as there are practically no other competitive hotels.Next time in Reims I consider to rent an apartment.
A Nice Hotel, But Fell Short of Five-Star Expectations. La Caserne Chanzy is, without doubt, a beautiful hotel, but after a two-night stay, I left feeling that it didn’t quite live up to its five-star billing, certainly not when compared to other five-star properties at a similar price point. In my opinion, it sits more comfortably as a four-star-plus experience. The check-in process was, at best, mediocre. Noticing the couple checking in beside us receive a warm, thorough welcome while we were given very little information about the facilities or restaurants on the premises was immediately disheartening. A five-star arrival experience should feel consistent for every guest. The biggest frustration of our stay was the spa. We were never informed at check-in or at any point - that there would be a charge of €15 per person to use the pool, sauna, and steam room. This was not mentioned during check-in, not communicated when we arrived at the spa, and it was nowhere to be found in our booking details. Discovering an unexpected charge at checkout is one thing, but what made it worse was that when we raised the issue, there was no understanding shown, and no offer of compensation or even a goodwill gesture. For a property marketing itself as five-star, this felt like a significant failure in both communication and customer care. Our room was also a disappointment. We appeared to have been allocated the furthest and darkest corner room available, and walking past other rooms while housekeeping was present made it hard not to notice the difference in what other guests were offered. On the positives - Little Georgette, the more casual of the two on-site restaurants, was genuinely lovely. Great food, good value for money, and the staff there were warm and attentive. It was a highlight of the stay. Overall, I’d encourage the hotel to look at how the reception team welcome and brief guests as a little more consistency and transparency would go a long way. There’s a really go
Thank you for a wonderful stay in your beautiful property . The staff are exceptional . Fatima, the concierge was able to get us a last minute booking at Ruinart in spite of it being fully booked months in advance . The restaurant reservations were also seamless . The Aircon was an issue in our room but the staff went out of their way to ensure we were shifted to another very lovely room . We highly recommend this venue for its charm location and outstanding staff. Super pastries at the reception which are constantly replenished .
Amazing room upgrade, champagne at check in, left a popcorn maker in the room with popcorn for our child, breakfast catering to gluten free was effortless (including home made GF bread). staff were super lovely and helpful and dining onsite at Little Georgette was delightful. Thank you and wish we could have stayed longer!
The Reception staff were very welcoming and they all spoke perfect English but also indulged me with my inferior French. They also observed on my passport that my birthday was the following day and gave us an upgrade. View from room attached in photo. |Class. |The bed and pillows were sublimely comfortable and the linens luxurious. The shower was an invigorating indulgence. |Restaurant and Spa will have to be on another visit. Would we stay anywhere else in Reims? Not a chancy.
Just a one night stay but such beautiful surroundings and a well appointed hotel. Nice and quiet once the outdoor cafes across the river had all packed up. Would be happy to stay here again.
